Clothing Recycle 2023

The 'Sewa TT Clothing Recycle' project is a proactive response to the pressing issues of clothing inequality and wastage in Trinidad and Tobago. With a staggering 92 million tonnes of clothing ending up in landfills globally each year, the project addresses the urgent need to combat both clothing waste and the stark disparities in access to suitable attire. Low to moderate-income families in Trinidad and Tobago struggle to obtain clothing for daily wear and important occasions, exacerbating social inequality and perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Moreover, textile waste comprises a significant portion of landfill material, worsening environmental problems.

The project's objectives are comprehensive, including clothing collection, sorting, distribution, and repurposing. It aims to engage the community, volunteers, and stakeholders to create a fair and transparent clothing distribution system. By collaborating with local institutions and educating beneficiaries about upcycling, the project seeks to foster sustainability and responsible consumption. The initiative also aims to create awareness about clothing waste and its solutions through media campaigns.

The 'Sewa TT Clothing Recycle' project targets diverse populations, including underserved families, long-stay hospital patients, migrants, and volunteers from various backgrounds. By serving approximately 1,500 families, 500 patients, and 300 migrants, it aims to provide clothing access to those most in need, promoting inclusivity and dignity.

The success of the project will be measured by the number of families served, the reduction in clothing waste, increased community engagement, a positive environmental impact, and enhanced awareness and education. Through these outcomes, the project envisions a more equitable and sustainable future for Trinidad and Tobago, where clothing waste is minimised, vulnerable populations receive support, and communities unite for positive change.
